Abstract | [Publication based on patent titled: QoS aware mobility selection mechanism to increase network capacity in the presence of Enhanced Nodes] Mobility Agent (MA) based family of micro-mobility protocols such as Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) reduce the large handover delays present in Mobile IPv6(MIPv6). The MA located in the local wireless access network acts as an anchor point between Mobile Node (MN) and the Correspondent Node (CN). The presence of MAs within the access network may results in non-optimal routing resulting in areas of bottleneck within the network and potentially reduce the capacity and throughput of the whole access network. To minimise this bottleneck and relive the non-optimal routing when possible, a QoS based Adaptive Route Optimization (QoSARO) is proposed. Not all classes of IP traffic require high traffic; for example, P2P traffic, web browsing, etc. do not require high QoS and are delay tolerant. Exploiting this delay tolerant nature of certain classes of traffic, these classes are routed directly to the CN bypassing the MA. We propose a dynamic and static QoSARO and evaluate the performance of the mechanism by modeling the network as a multi-commodity flow problem and showing the improvement in network capacity and average packet delay. |
